Board Appoints Harris CMPC and SPC

Brunswick, Ga. (7/6/2016)

Commissioner of Natural Resources, Mark Williams has announced the appointment of Zachary Harris of St. Simons Island to fill the unexpired term of Superior Court Judge-Elect, Bert Guy on the Coastal Marshlands Protection Committee and Shore Protection Committee. Mr. Harris was appointed by the Board of Natural Resources during their June 29th meeting.

Zachary “Zach” Harris is a litigation associate at Atwood Choate, P.C. practicing in general civil litigation, including business and commercial law. He is a licensed Georgia attorney and is admitted to practice in all Georgia courts. Harris is a graduate of Emory University and Georgia State University College of Law. Originally from Jesup, Georgia, he and his wife, Casey, live and work on St. Simons Island. Prior to joining Atwood Choate, Harris served as Deputy Counsel to Georgia DNR, handling Department litigation, contracts, and administrative law matters.

“The members of the committees play an important role in conserving the marshes, tidal rivers, and beaches by making decisions that balance human use and resource protection,” Harris said. “As a lifelong Georgian, I consider it an honor to be vested with this significant responsibility to ensure that our coast remains a truly unique place for present and future generations.”

Five residents of Georgia serve as the membership of the Coastal Marshland Protection Committee and Shore Protection Committee. The Commissioner of Natural Resources serves as an obligatory member and chair, while three of the remaining members must reside in one of Georgia’s six ocean-facing counties. The committees typically meet six times a year in a public forum where permit applications are presented for consideration.
