GA DNR to Host Annual Beach Week Event On Jekyll Island and St Simons Island

Brunswick, Ga. (6/21/2017)

With summer in full swing, Georgia beaches throughout the Golden Isles are popular destinations for visitors and residents. As a kick-off for the Golden Isles annual 4th of July celebration, island beach-goers have the opportunity to learn about the natural wonders of the coast at the Georgia DNR’s “Beach Week”. This year, Jekyll Island beach visitors can experience Beach Week at the Beach Village on the Village Green Lawn on Monday, June 26. On Wednesday, June 28, the Beach Week celebration moves to the old Coast Guard Station beach access area on St. Simons Island.

At both locations, from 10am to 3pm, there will be special surprises, new exhibitors and new exhibits to celebrate the annual Beach Week event. DNR will be showcasing the new Marine Habitat License Plate. Available through local tag offices in Georgia, residents have an opportunity to help enhance coastal fish and wildlife populations through the purchase of this new specialty license plate for their vehicle and boat trailer. The majority of the sales proceeds for the marine habitat plate featuring a red drum will go into a dedicated fund to restore and enhance fish habitat in Georgia’s estuaries and the Atlantic Ocean.

Joining GA DNR/Coastal Resources and Law Enforcement Divisions will be the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Tidelands Nature Center, UGA MAREX/Sea Grant, Keep Golden Isles Beautiful, Glynn County Recreation and Parks, Department of Public Health and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
